文壇のエリート主義にうんざりし、アカデミズムにも落胆したという23歳の女性とそれに対する村上春樹の回答・・
I am almost tired of literary elitism and thus turned to cultural studies and sociology, thinking they deal with hard hitting realities. But I was disheartened by the pretentiousness of the people in these fields, how they use theories to justify things that they do wrong. I cannot stand this bullshit anymore and would really like to meet some genuine people who actually care about others. Does this sound like an impossible task?

I know what you mean and how you feel. I’m tired of literary elitism, too. I do not like academism so much. Many academic people are talking bullshit. But some people I have met at several universities are nice people who are interesting in many ways. Don’t judge a book by its cover, as they say. Be patient. Don’t expect to meet genuine people. Try to find genuineness in people.
あなたが言うことの意味やあなたが感じていることはわかります。私も文壇のエリート主義はうんざりです。アカデミズムもそれほど好きではありません。多くの学者はでたらめを言っています。しかしいくつかの大学で私が出会った人たちは、多くの部分で面白い良い人たちでした。よく言われるように、人は見かけによりません。忍耐強さも必要です。いつか本物の人々に出会えると期待するのではなく、人々の中に本物を見つけましょう。
「literary elitism」というのが具体的に何を指すのかがよくわからない感じもしますが・・
「Don’t expect to meet genuine people. Try to find genuineness in people」が何かカッコいい感じもします・・
